A fierce dragon flies across the front of these late Victorian cufflinks. The dragon is beautifully modeled with reptilian skin, richly detailed wings, grasping talons and a gaping maw. Created by Alling & Company in 14kt gold, circa 1900.
 The Victorians were fascinated with imaginary and exotic creatures. A teeming menagerie of lions, griffins, dragons and serpents graces the cufflinks and jewels of the era. The possibilities were only limited by the wearer's and jewelry maker's imagination. These cufflinks are a wonderful example.
 The cufflinks are well constructed. The solid gold tops are attached to bean-shape backs with sturdy "Y" bridges. A small gold ball is set at the base of the "Y" to stabilize and strengthen the bridge. The attention to small details by Victorian jewelers is phenomenal.
 These cufflinks were created by Alling & Co., a maker of fine cufflinks, stickpins and other jewelry during the late Victorian period and early 20th century. The firm was in operation from about 1840 to 1915. The maker's mark for Alling & Co. (a three-leaf clover encircling "14" and "A") is stamped on the bridge of each cufflink.
