Alling Dragon and Pearl Stickpin
Alling Dragon! |
|
A fantastic winged creature with the head of a lion and body of a serpent coiled around a pearl. A nice example of the Victorian fascination with mythological and invented creatures. The stickpin is beautifully detailed. Crafted in 14kt gold, circa 1890.
This miniature jewel was created by Alling & Company, a maker of fine stickpins, cufflinks and other jewels from 1843 to 1915. The firm created jewelry for Tiffany & Company, Starr & Marcus and other fine jewelers of the day. The Alling & Company maker's mark, a shamrock with "14" and "A" on the petals is stamped on the reverse of the lion-serpent. The stickpin is beautifully crafted and richly detailed. The reverse is pictured below. Note how the sturdy pin stem is securely attached to the solid gold back. Cost: $325 | ![]() |
