Amethyst and Pearl Brooch

A dramatic Art Nouveau brooch of undulating curves and entwined organic shapes.   A wonderful example of flowing Art Nouveau design with a hint of Arts & Crafts. The brooch is set with a regal purple amethyst and accented with five small pearls.  Created by Bippart, Griscom & Osborn in 14kt gold, circa 1900.

This brooch is almost as beautiful from the back as it is from the front.    Note the sturdy gold framework that supports the curving forms and gemstones.  The brooch is secured with a sturdy pinstem and "C" clasp.  A chatelaine hook beneath the pin allows a watch or other pendant to be suspended below the brooch.

The reverse of the brooch and clasp are stamped "14K" for the purity of the gold.  To the right of the gold mark on the reverse is the partially obscured maker's mark of Bippart, Griscom & Osborn  -  a flaming torch lying on its side.  Bippart, Griscom & Osborn were maker's of fine gold and platinum jewels during the late 19th and early decades of the 20th century.
