Dragon and Sceptre Stickpin
Dragon and Sceptre! |
|
The Victorians celebrated an exotic menagerie of mythical creatures atop their stickpins. This pin features a fierce dragon protecting a golden sceptre while watching with a wary dark green eye. Crafted in 14kt gold, circa 1900.
This stickpin was created by Carter, Howe & Company, a maker of beautiful stickpins and cufflinks in the decades around 1900. The firm's mark, an arrowhead surrounding a "C", is visible on the reverse of the stickpin (pictured below) next to the gold purity mark ("14K"). The stickpin is nicely crafted and richly detailed. Note how the sturdy pin stem is securely attached to the solid back of the dragon. Measurements: This 14kt gold stickpin is 2 9/16" long and weighs 2.5 grams. The fiery dragon is 11/16" tall and 5/8" wide. | ![]() |
