Victorian Lion-Serpent Brooch

A Victorian chimera brooch with the head of a lion, feathered mane of an eagle and body of a serpent.  The twisting form of the lion-serpent appears to be devouring a pearl-set flower bound to its tail.  A wonderful example of the Victorian fascination with fantastic and mythological creatures.  Created by Carter, Howe in 14kt gold, circa 1890.

The brooch is beautifully crafted.  Note the sturdy "C" clasp and pin stem.  A chatelaine hook allows a watch or drop pendant to be suspended beneath the brooch.  The beauty of Victorian jewels is matched by the care with which they were designed and crafted.

This brooch was created by Carter, Howe & Company (predecessor to Carter, Gough), a maker of beautiful brooches, cufflinks and other jewels during the decades around 1900.  The firm's mark, an arrowhead surrounding a "C", is found on the clasp.  The left side of the clasp is stamped "14K" for the purity of the gold.
