Rococo Cherub Brooch!
An elegant Victorian gold brooch in the ornate Rococo Revival style.  The center is set with an oval cabochon Turquoise and four white pearls.  Beneath the Turquoise a small cherub modestly peers downward.  Crafted in 14kt gold, circa 1870.

The name "rococo" derives from the French word for shell,  rocaille.  The style is characterized by shell-like forms and swirling wave-like curves.  The mid 1800s saw a resurgence of interest in this decorative style from early 17th century France.

The back of the brooch is as ornately and carefully crafted as the front.  Note the sturdy bridges that tie together the curving elements and the strong pin stem and clasp.  A chatelaine hook allows a small watch or drop pendant to be suspended below the brooch.
