Victorian Pansy and Moon Pin
Honey Moon! |
|
The late Victorians loved flowers and jewels with hidden meanings. This Victorian pin features a pansy cradled in a crescent moon.
The five petals of the pansy are beautifully decorated with rich blue and white enamels. A small pearl rests in the center of the flower. Crafted in 14kt gold, this pin dates from around 1890. Cost: SoldThe Victorians loved jewels with hidden messages. For example, in our pin the flower and the moon form a rebus - a puzzle in which pictures and objects represent words. The flower represents "honey" and, when combined with the crescent moon, they spell out "honeymoon." This type of jewel was known as a "honeymoon pin" and may have been given by a husband to his wife on their wedding night.
