Victorian Stickpin with Winged Lion

Victorian 15kt gold stickpin of a winged lion. (J4802)

    The Flyin' Lion!

Full view of Victorian winged lion stickpin. (J4802) This Victorian stickpin features a winged lion cradled in a curved horn-like object.  A small pearl is set in front of the lion.

The horn-like object surrounding the lion is somewhat of a mystery!  Is it explained by a mythological or historical tale?  Or was it merely a pretty detail added by the jewel's designer?  Any  suggestions?

The stickpin is beautifully crafted in 15kt gold and dates from around 1880.

Cost:  $325

Measurements:  This wonderful stickpin measures  2.25"
in length.  The winged lion is nearly  0.5"  tall and  0.5"  wide.

On the back of the stickpin (below) you can see two small holes created when the stickpin was made.  The top of the stickpin was crafted in two separate pieces that were then fused together.  The two holes allowed heat and hot gasses to escape during the fusing process.

The back of a jewel can often tell you as much as the front!

The late Victorians loved whimsical jewels with fantastic creatures.
